Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I insert drum symbols?

On iPhone, use the compact palette at the bottom of the screen. On iPad/Mac, use the sidebar palette. The palette is context-aware and only shows valid symbols for your current cursor position.

Q: What drum notation symbols are supported?

Cymbals: x (Hi-Hat), * (Crash), ° (Open Hi-Hat), + (Ride), ± (Bell). Drums: o (Snare), t i j (Toms), Q (Kick), f (Foot Hi-Hat), - (Rest).

Q: How do I set the tempo (BPM)?

Add a metadata line at the top of your chart: [140 BPM]. You can set any tempo between 60-200 BPM. Default is 120 BPM.

Q: Can I sync my charts between devices?

Yes! All documents automatically sync via iCloud. Start editing on your iPhone and continue on your iPad or Mac seamlessly.

Q: How do I export my charts?

Tap the "Export" button (iPhone: in bottom palette; iPad/Mac: in Quick Actions or menu). Choose 2 or 4 bars per line format. You can copy to clipboard or export to a text file.

Q: Where can I find the source code?

Drum Charter is open source! Visit our GitHub repository at github.com/ralf-brauchler/DrumCharter.

Q: The app isn't playing sound on my device

Make sure your device volume is turned up and not in silent mode. Check that the app has permission to play audio in Settings. Try restarting the app.

Q: Can I import/export to other notation formats?

Currently, Drum Charter uses its own text-based format for maximum simplicity and readability. Exported charts are plain text and can be easily shared or imported into other applications.
